Wing Chun Kung Fu is the Chinese martial art system Bruce Lee originally learned and it later became a highly popular form of martial arts in the west. Unlike many other kung fu styles, Wing Chun emphasizes self-defense, skills based on the Wing Chun theories.
According to legend, Wing Chun was invented by Ng Mui, a Buddhist nun who survived the destruction of the Shaolin Temple in the 1700s. Having extensive knowledge of traditional kung fu systems and theories, she created a style structurally capable of defeating these existing systems. Mui passed on her knowledge to Yim Wing Chun, who further modified the system to make it compatible with a woman’s smaller body giving the practitioner a fighting edge against physically stronger opponents. Wing Chun later taught the style to her husband Leung Bok Chau, who named the system after his wife.
However, the first person who brought Wing Chun out of secrecy from China into the public eye was Ip Man, Bruce Lee’s master, in 1950 in Hong Kong , Ip Man started to spread his discipline to the rest of the world.
