Triangle Step - Yip Man Wing Chun Kung Fu Virginia Beach - sifu Gorden Lu - www.vbwingchun.com

The triangle step is one of the most important and fundamental aspects of the Wing Chun footwork. The stepping is initialized from the basic Wing Chun form stance. Many hand movements can be combined to make a technique with the triangle footwork such like Lop-sao punch, Pak-sao punch, Gan-sao, Kwan-sao and more...

Footwork & Hand-Leg Coordination

Wing Chun Second Form < Chum Kiu > - Yip Man Wing Chun Kung Fu Virginia Beach - sifu Gorden Lu - www.vbwingchun.com

The second form's footwork is not the only concept emphasized. Hand and leg coordination is very important as well. For examples, students need to have a good control arm positioning and a good timing for pull and push power required for the section of Lan sao and Bong sao turning exercises. Students need to have good timing and structure on pushing the Bong sao side way while simultaneously stepping forward. Power is also generated from the back leg. By pushing the back leg while stepping forward, power is transferred from the heel to both elbows. This is similar to the stepping forward with two Bong sao exercise.

Kwan Sao

Kwan Sao - Yip Man Wing Chun Kung Fu Virginia Beach - sifu Gorden Lu - www.vbwingchun.com

There has many different ways to apply Kwan Sao in the fighting. To easy let the practitioner understand Kwan Sao. I define into two ways:

1. Hard way - jam / strike / cover -->  meet the force

2. Soft way - swing / roll / throw -->  redirect power

* When using Kwan Sao to stop something coming at you. The Bong Sao always need to be the first defense, in other words, Bong Sao is always first contact and Tan Sao is more like backup, support, insurance and second defense.

* Jam forward in the Chi Sao, Bong Sao's elbow can't be too low and need to push straight forward and point to opponent's shoulder.

* When using the soft way techniques on Kwan Sao, the body need to be relax, so it can swing or throw fast and more flexible on the rolling, too

The students of Wing Chun show always remember two Wing Chun Kung Fu aphorisms: "When the opponent advances, stick with and detain him; when he retreats, escort him" and "As the opponent changes hand movement direction and loosing contact, attack him directly."

Gaan Sao

Gaan Sao - Yip Man Wing Chun Kung Fu Virginia Beach - sifu Gorden Lu - www.vbwingchun.com

Gaan in Chinese word is using  tillage implements to cultivate.  The Gaan Sao motion is similar when you raise up the rake with two arms and swing forward and downward to the ground. That is why Wing Chun named this motion "Gaan Sao". You can use Gaan Sao in many different situations that happen to you, but one of the main ideas for using Gaan Sao is when the attack come to you  so fast and you are not sure where is your opponent to aim at you and this moment you can just react with Gaan Sao to cove your opening and at same time to get away. Please to remember, Gaan Sao is one of few Wing Chun movements that can cover with wider area.
